Isocyanate-free Polyurethane Coatings Technology For High-performance Applications

While Polyurethane (PU) coatings enjoy unique position due to their superior performance, durability combined with versatility of their application space, the use of hazardous isocyanate compounds in their manufacturing has been a matter of increasing concern. A number of initiatives have been taken across the globe to reduce or mitigate the human exposure of isocyanate during processing and/ or application of PU coatings. A new generation non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) coating technology has been developed for addressing this concern while maintaining or improving their application and performance requirements. A range of NIPU resins have been derived by leveraging poly cyclic carbonates and diamines chemistry, by using an energy efficient process. Some structural differences between the conventional PU and NIPU have been addressed by careful designing of NIPU building blocks. The study shows that NIPU coatings can be formulated with outstanding and tunable performance properties, and hence has potential for a myriads of end use applications.

Urethane Polyols for Aminoplast Crosslinked High Performance Coatings

Water soluble urethane polyol resins have been developed for coatings systems crosslinked with aminoplast resins. These polymer modifiers are capable of imparting superior mechanical properties, and chemical resistance in high performance amino-formaldehyde crosslinked coating applications. They are water soluble, but do not contain neutralizing amines, surfactants or co-solvents. As resin modifiers, the hydroxyl functionality and urethane backbone of these resins allow formulators to enhance performance of aminoplast crosslinked coatings by incorporating urethane groups into the backbone of the cured polymer matrix. Especially their water dispersibility, superior flexibility, flow and leveling properties combined with improved adhesion, salt spray, overbake, and stone chip resistance, make them very suitable for use as modifier for waterborne primers. In addition development of optimal urethane polyol-to-crosslinker ratios leads to a highly crosslinked film with features such as improved corrosion and humidity resistance, as well as higher hardness with maintained flexibility. Furthermore, reactivity differences between primary and secondary hydroxyl functional urethane polyols, in the crosslinking reactions and its subsequent effect on melamine self-condensation will be discussed.

Impacts of silane modified colloidal silica on waterborne clear coatings properties

Water-free systems of silane modified colloidal silica particles have been found to enhance mechanical properties of coatings. Concentrated epoxysilane modified colloidal silica in the form of aqueous sols is one of most readily available sources of nano-particles for the coating area. Compared with conventional silica sols, silane modified colloidal silica has greater stability towards aggregation and gelling, both as is and in latex-based coating formulations.

The effect of epoxysilane modified colloidal silica, added to water-based coating formulations, on the mechanical properties of resin films was studied. In general, the effect of the silica particles depended strongly on the resin and other components of the coating formulation but very significant improvements of block resistance (and hence sanding properties) were seen. In addition, extended open time, better penetration and substrate wetting for ?anfeuerung? in acrylic resin based wood coatings and additionally of mechanical properties in 2-pack PUD system could be observed.

Synthesis of Cardanol Based Epoxy and Use it in Bio Based UV Cured Fire Retardent Coating

Purpose: The paper aims in the use of tri-glyciydil resin (TGC) prepared from 100 percent cardanol and to develop a fire retardant, UV cured coating using tri(acryloyloxyethyl)phosphate (TAEP) monomer. With the increase in demand of petrochemical resources resulting in its continuous depletion and increased prices, it?s a great challenge for chemical industry to look down for palliatives based on renewable and sustainable materials which are eco-friendly and non hazardous. The UV cured epoxy acrylate based coating is solvent free coating hence causing no environmental pollution.

Green architectural coatings for India - Threats and opportunities in formulation science

Environmental sustainability is an inevitable need of today in coating industry as in other industry. Globally, coating industry has positively embraced the challenges and opportunities of going green across the world. In India Asian Paints, being a market leader, has taken several voluntary steps in developing greener architectural paints. Green Assure is an voluntary label of Asian Paints which commits VOC levels, CMRs (carcinogen, mutagen and reportoxin) and other toxic raw materials in compliant to US GS-11 standard. From a formulation perspective, migrating to greener formulation is generally believed to be an exercise of looking for alternates for non-green raw materials and intermediates. It may be true in many of the developments, however, this also created number of opportunities and challenges to innovate and deliver with minimal economic impact. In fact, cost is not a bigger challenge for coating industries to migrate towards greener products. The bigger challenges in formulating the greener products are those that appear as demons once the product reaches the market. Weather conditions, application practices, construction quality and environment in Indian subcontinent leads to several unexpected challenges and establishing the root cause or mechanism of such problems is an herculean task. In this presentation, handful of challenges in formulating a green product and opportunities for research and technology to transform these breakdowns into breakthroughs is discussed. To name a few, weaker resistance to in-can bacterial attack, physical stability during storage, migration of ingredients through paint film.

Multifunctional Additives for Waterborne Architectural Coatings

Abstract - Dow Industrial Solutions provides different amines and amine based products for the coatings industry. Among them, Imidazoline based chemistries have the potential to be used in architectural coatings. One of the areas of application of imidazoline compounds is in the water based coatings. This paper reports experimental studies of the imidazole derivative mixture as multifunctional additive for water based paints. Imidazoline mixture has been studied in different paint formulations and emulsion systems. The additive imparts significant advantages in a paint formulation like an increase in pH and freeze-thaw stability. In addition, open time of the waterborne paints is enhanced by addition of the imidazoline mixture.

Dirt Pick-Up Resistance: Challenges for Water Based Paints

With the growing population-urbanization in India, growth in industries and the environmental changes is a challenge for developing durable vis-à-vis sustainable exterior paints which lasts long along with the retention in aesthetic beauty when they are exposed to harsh climatic conditions like UV light, rain. Changing dirt is one of the important reasons for the tarnishing of paints. Dirt Pick-Up Resistance (DPUR) is an important performance parameter which indirectly also hampers other coating properties. The purpose of this paper is to establish a co-relation of DPUR with the understanding of the physical and chemical nature of dirt of different geographies i.e. mapping of dirt; its classification viz. hydrophobic and hydrophilic dirt and the factors due to which dirt pick-up is aggravated. Various approaches to improve the DPUR of water based polymer coatings have been discussed and an attempt has been made to review the procedures which are used for the measurement of Dirt Pick-Up on coating.

Silicone additives for improved surface properties of coatings

Most coating systems need good surface properties in order to deliver desired aesthetics and performance. Depending on coating chemistry and substrate type, many formulations suffer from insufficient substrate wetting that can cause defects such as craters and pinholes. In addition, insufficient flow and leveling can cause non-smooth surfaces and defects such as brush/roller marks, orange peel, etc. CoatOSil* silicone-polyether block copolymer additives are excellent candidates for reducing these defects. The silicone portion of the molecule works to provide low surface tension while the polyether portion works to enable compatibility. These additives are used to help minimize the flow of material from regions of low surface tension to regions of higher surface tension, thus suppressing eddy formation to achieve smoother film surface. CoatOSil additives offer improved substrate wetting, flow, and leveling, as well as additional benefits such as increased slip, mar resistance, and gloss. These additives can have a strong effect, at low concentrations, on most types of water- and solvent-borne coatings.

The Swiss Army Knife among dispersions - multifunctional applications and maximum performance

At the end of the 1880s, the pocket knife was developed and produced primarily for the Swiss army, which was intended to help the soldiers, among other things, with eating and disassembling the standard rifle at that time. The tools contained in it were only a blade, a can opener, a slotted screwdriver and an awl.

To this day, the pocket knife has been continuously improved by further functions. It is now standard practice not only to find the above mentioned tools in the pocket knife, but also a pair of pliers, saw, scissors and nail file. In order to be prepared for a spontaneous picnic, a bottle opener and a corkscrew have long since become the benchmark. Despite the multifunctional applications, it remains handy and fits in every pocket.

If one compares the possibilities in the application of superhydrophobic, multiphase and self-crosslinking dispersions with the Swiss Army Knife, this can be the basis for the idea of a multifunctional dispersion. Alberdingk Boley GmbH has taken on this task and tried to develop a dispersion that is both ? multifunctional and particularly powerful.

The testing of anti-corrosive coatings is a highly time and ressources consuming procedure. While in the past the testing time for system screenings was already significantly reduced from years to months respectively weeks changing from natural weathering to different forms of accelerated testing, like salt spray testing and humidity testing, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is said to have a high potential to reduce a single test to hours. This would enable technologists and scientists to really set-up high-throughput screening in the fields of anti-corrosive coatings.

The current talk will present results of different paint systems varying binders, substrates, anti-corrosive pigments etc. and comparing salt spray test results with the test results of much faster electrochemical impedance spectroscopy from the standpoint of an anti-corrosive pigment manufacturer.

Recent Developments in Low-Foaming Nonionic Wetting Agents for Waterborne Coatings

Wetting Agents play a critical role during production of waterborne coatings, they assist in the grind stage by improving the dispersion of pigments allowing a shortening of the grind time. During application wetting agents make it possible to apply waterborne coatings to low energy surfaces.

Anionic wetting agents can have excellent dynamic surface tension control, but often display foaminess in grind and when applied. Low foaming nonionic wetting agents have found value in industrial coatings where microfoam cannot be tolerated, however they do not typically provide adequate surface tension control.

This presentation will show how our recent advances in silicon-free nonionic wetting agent technology are now providing industrial and architectural waterborne coatings with low dynamic and equilibrium surface tension. The wetting agent can be added at any point of the paint manufacturing process without generating foam and dispersion issues, eliminating microfoam and undispersed pigment particles in the finished coating.

Structural Coloration ? A Novel Approach for Paint Coloration without Pigments

Biomimicry is a process of emulating structures, patterns and strategies found in nature to achieve sustainable solutions. Stuctural coloration is one of the well known natural phenomena by which various natural systems like butterfly wings, peacock feathers, beetle shells etc attain color through physical interaction of the visible light with well defined microstructural bio-surfaces. Taking inspiration from structural color concept, herein, we report a novel method to obtain colour in paint through proper alignment of synthetic polymer nanoparticles. Poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid) and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate-co-2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate) core-shell nanoparticles with spherical particle shape (SEM) and uniform particle size distribution were prepared via emulsion polymerization. The resultant core-shell nanoparticles exhibited different colors ranging from violet, blue and green upon spray-coating on metal substrate. The resulting color of the films depended on the particle size (170-300 nm), refractive index and spacing between the core and shell after self-assembly of the particles on the substrate.

Strategy Synthesis &Application of Multifunctional SelfHealing Paints for Corrosion Protection

Corrosion is one of the basic reasons for application of paints and coatings. Corrosion can?t be stopped but it can only be controlled by application of different smart coatings and other methods. Self- healing characteristic of coatings has been inspired by the remarkable property of nature i.e., the ability to heal damage. Self- healing is incorporated in coatings by modification of polymer properties i.e., reversible polymeric system to recover and enhance the functional performance of coatings. Microencapsulation and hollow fiber embedment are the two technologies used for self- healing property. Some systems also show their superhydrophobic character alongwith self- healing. Its application include automobile, aerospace, structural ceramic, electrical coatings etc. and coatings for different metal alloys and conversion coatings. In this paper we will discuss the various aspects, mechanism and toolbox based on physical phenomena for design, synthesis and application of self- healing coatings for corrosion protection.

Introducing silver ion anti-bacterial binder solution

Superbug is a word that is now familiar worldwide, one example is NDM-1 named after capital of India, New Delhi. The most well-known superbug is MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), which causes only in the USA, over 100,000 hospitalizations annually with MRSA infection, and direct medical cost is estimated at over 30 000/patient*. Many so-called anti-bacterial paints are prepared by adding organic biocides which can include: quaternary ammonium salt, alcohol, hydroxybenzene, organic metal, pyridine, imidazole, isothiazolinone etc. Compared with regular biocides, silver is a safe, effective and environmentally responsible anti-bacterial agent. Dow developed PRIMAL BR-101 Binder with Anti-bacterial Silver Ion to address this growing concern providing a safe long-term solution.
